About D-Day counting

"D-Day" counting is a way of expressing how many days remain until an important date, or how many days have passed since one. It's widely used for exams, weddings, project deadlines, and anniversaries, but the same idea applies anywhere you want a simple, at-a-glance countdown or count-up to a specific date.

How the day count is calculated

This tool compares your selected date to today's date at midnight in your local time zone and counts the whole days between them. If the target date is in the future, it shows D-N (N days remaining); if it's today, it shows D-Day; if it's in the past, it shows D+N (N days since that date). The count is always based on calendar days, not 24-hour periods, so it doesn't matter what time of day you check it.

Frequently asked questions

Does D-Day count today as day 0 or day 1?
Today is always D-Day (day 0). The target date itself is never counted as one of the remaining days — the count of D+1 begins the day after.
Does this account for time zones?
The calculation uses your device's local date, so the day boundary is midnight in your own time zone. If you and someone else are in different time zones, you may briefly see different day counts near midnight.
Can I use this for a date in the past, like an anniversary?
Yes. Selecting a past date shows D+N, which tells you how many days have passed since that date — useful for anniversaries, relationship milestones, or tracking how long a project has been running.
